Welcome to “It’s All Greek To Me! – Introduction to New Testament Greek.” This course has been designed and taught with the committed Christian layperson in mind, having been field-tested with a number of in class and online students over the course of two years. Their responses to the course have ranged from “excellent” to “very helpful” to “eye-opening!”  You are invited to take the plunge with them into New Testament (NT) Greek.

Study of the Greek of the NT helps us reach a more accurate and biblically qualified understanding of concepts, terms and principles of the New Testament. The course will guide you through a knowledge of the Greek alphabet, major grammatical principles of NT Greek, conducting Greek-based word-studies, understanding how to use NT Greek textual tools, translation principles and perspectives and how to find out which Greek autographs are closest to the original manuscripts. Pastors and teachers will find this course most informative and helpful in doing NT Bible studies and preaching and teaching.

There are 10 weeks of assignments of equal value, which can easily be expanded upon by the student’s ongoing study and application. The course calls for 4-6 hours of study time on each of the lessons, which are provided both via a PowerPoint format and recorded on DVDs. Each lesson has an opening progress quiz along with a lesson assignment from the textbook and other sources. The lesson PowerPoints are adaptations of lessons in the textbook. The DVDs add sound and video to the lessons, allowing the students to see and hear the Greek that is taught. There is an added bonus of a CD-ROM, which comes with the course textbook for extra application and insights.

Textbooks include The Greek New Testament with Dictionary along with William Mounce’s book, Greek For the Rest of Us (Hardcover with CD-ROM), along with a couple of helpful study guides. Limited copies of both books are available from the instructor at a discounted price. Included with the books are PowerPoint lessons along with a DVD of each session. Total cost from the instructor is $75 for the complete package. The student can substitute his or her own Greek NT with a package price then of $50.

Assignments are due on a regular weekly, or at most bi-weekly, basis. Quizzes and homework assignments are on a session by session basis, on the honor system, with regular interaction via email with the instructor. The instructor is also available via phone at 717-653-1616 (daytime hours) for interaction and advice. I will need a weekly report from you as to your progress. Grading is on a descriptive basis, from “excellent” to “good” to “needs improvement” to “no credit.” Grades will be assessed by the instructor via email and phone interaction with the student.

A language course is always study-intensive. That means that you will need to commit yourself to the time necessary for you to understand, assimilate and master the lessons. Memorizing basic vocabulary is also essential for successful mastery of the language and for beginning NT study. Those who persevere through the lessons will find ample reward and enrichment in their Christian lives and thought. That’s what the class at Antrim Church found as their reward. They are better students of the Bible today for their efforts. That is my hope and prayer for you as well.

A complete course outline, with complete assignments, is available to the registered student. Email carl@carlshankconsulting.com for a complete set of DVDs, Syllabi, and Course Files.

Thanks for investing your time and effort in the study of God’s Word!
